Wranglers Weekend Roundup – Week Ending October 13, 2025
By Jeff Falls
For the second weekend in a row, the Sylvan Lake Wranglers faced a pair of teams from the South Division of the HJHL. Last weekend they faced Cochrane and Medicine Hat and split the games, going 1-1. This weekend they faced High River and Strathmore, again splitting the two games, but this time going 1-0-1, meaning they took 3 of a possible 4 points.
As of Sunday morning, the Wranglers are 1 point ahead of the Red Deer Vipers, who have 1 game in hand on the Wranglers. The two teams play a home-and-home series next weekend, which should be very interesting. Red Deer has not lost a game since the season opener, here in Sylvan.
Friday vs. High River
This weekend the Wranglers faced High River on Friday. They dominated the Flyers all game and started off the first period outshooting them 27-2 and outscoring them 3-1. In the second period, they continued their domination, firing 20 more shots on net and adding 4 more goals. In the third period, they continued their strong play and scored once on the power play to win the game by a score of 8-1.
Goal scorers: Maddox Bignell, Hayden Motowylo (x2), Owen Callow, Avery Shadbolt, Ethan Clark, and Riley Teulon.
Top performers:
- Ayden Henry and Ayden Shaw each had three-assist games.
- Riley Teulon, Hayden Motowylo, Avery Shadbolt, and the Bignell boys, Maddex and Xaiden, all had 2-point games.
- Recently added Ronan Shirtliffe earned his first HJHL point.
- Goalie Brock Lott stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced.
Saturday @ Strathmore
Saturday night, the Wranglers travelled to Strathmore to take on the Wheatland Kings. Things were a bit tougher in this game, and the Wranglers dropped a 4-3 overtime decision. Sylvan never managed to get the lead.
The Kings scored the only goal of the first period. The Wranglers tied it early in the second period on a power-play goal by Brody Pearson, his first of the year. The Kings took back the lead about five minutes later. The Wranglers tied it again with a goal by Karson Ledieu.
In the third period, both teams traded goals early—Strathmore scoring 40 seconds in, only for Josh Perreault to answer 18 seconds later with his first of the year. That tied the game 3-3, and regulation ended that way.
Unfortunately, Sylvan took a Too Many Men on the Ice penalty with only two seconds left in regulation, meaning they entered overtime shorthanded. The Kings capitalized with a power-play goal just 38 seconds into extra time, handing the Wranglers a tough loss.
Season Outlook
Eight games into the season, the Wranglers are still atop the HJHL standings with 13 of a possible 16 points. Red Deer is just 1 point back and holds a game in hand. The Mountainview Colts are 3 points back, also with a game in hand.
Xaiden Bignell leads the Wranglers in scoring with 6 goals and 7 assists—just 2 points behind the league leader. Riley Teulon and Maddex Bignell are close behind, each with 11 points.
Looking Ahead
Next weekend will be a huge weekend for the Wranglers. Hopefully, they come up big and create some breathing room in the standings.
Go, Wranglers, Go!!!
